My Anniversary: A Timeline of this Past Year

1 May

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the release of Minutes Before Sunset, book 1 of The Timely Death Trilogy. I’ve been pondering many ideas on how to go about this date – because it feels so surreal – and one idea in particular kept popping back up because I keep hearing one particular question:

How did I gain my followers and readership?

There is no simple answer, but I like to explain it in the only way I can: stats. I like to share my stats because it helps others see how websites and writers shape over time. I even have an Events page so readers can see where I’ve come from in order to get where I am today. So, I am going to do that with Minutes Before Sunset. Below, you can explore a timeline that showcases the moments that grew this novel over the past year. To keep it simple, I am ONLY including events about The Timely Death Trilogy. If you want to know about everything I’ve been up to – like my other publications or how I became C.O.O. of AEC Stellar Publishing – click here or visit my Events page at the top.

When you explore the timeline below, all links will take you to a relevant blog post. Throughout this post, I have added more about my life that I haven’t mentioned before now, so I hope you enjoy it!

May 1, 2013: Release Day

Originally, AEC released ebooks before paperbacks. (Now, we’re the opposite.) So May 1 came around and the ebook of Minutes Before Sunset was released first.

May 10, 2013: Full Paperback Preview

Again, we didn’t have the full layout at first, so the back of the novel changed a few times. This ended up being the final version, and it still looks like this today, and the back description was chosen by readers who voted between three different options. Fun fact: I took the photograph on the back cover. It was really important for me to have it on the novel. Thankfully, AEC Stellar approved it. 😀

May, 23, 2013: I Received My Paperback in the Mail

I put three pictures below. The photo on the left was the day I received Minutes Before Sunset in the mail. My father took the picture on his back patio. I love that grill on the left. Bogart loves napping in that orange, lawn chair. And I am wearing one of my late mother’s rings – a sapphire I inherited from her. You might recognize the clothes I am because they were on “Dress Like the Book” photograph (on the right)  I shared last month.

Is this what we call foreshadowing?

June 4, 2013: Goodreads Nomination

Minutes Before Sunset was nominated for Goodreads Book of the Month for General Fiction of July, 2013.

June 14, 2013: Paperback Released

June 28, 2013: Minutes Before Sunset awarded “Book of the Month” for General Fiction on Goodreads.

This still means so much to me. To all those who voted back then, thank you. I still hold this moment so close to my writer’s heart.

July 27, 2013: Book Signing

Originally, I had a book signing at a huge event for novels in Missouri, but I had to cancel last minute due to unfortunate and unavoidable circumstances. I still wanted to share it on this timeline because it is relevant to this past year, and it was probably one of those sadder moments where you feel really let down. A book release isn’t all fun and games, but it ended up being smiles in the end. 😀

August 11, 2013: New Edition Released

Minutes Before Sunset was redone – mainly because the first cover was extremely washed out – but there are some inside edits that were adds. This is still the edition used today. The photo below was of the day I received this new version in the mail.

September 30, 2013: Soundtrack:

Minutes Before Sunset now has a soundtrack on 8tracks, which you can still listen to by clicking here. The songs include the XX, Florence + the Machine, Jem, and more, but I wanted to say one thing. I rarely write with music. I might brainstorm with music, but it’s difficult for me to write with music playing, so these songs are what I pictured playing in the background of a movie if it were ever made.

October 14, 2013: My Stats Started Spiking

After hitting #407 in Paranormal Romance, I feel like this was the week Minutes Before Sunset began picking up the great traction is still has today. I still haven’t figured it out, but during this week, T. Harv Eker, #1 NY Times Bestselling author of Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, quoted me on his page. Following that, Shawne Duperon, 6-time Emmy winner and founder of Project Forgive also retweeted the quote and tweeted to me. My novel was also put on a bookshelf in a store for the first time. But who knows? This world is mysterious. I simply trust my gut when I say this is where I think it started.

November 2, 2013: Seconds Before Sunrise Announcements

Seconds Before Sunrise (book 2) is copyrighted and receives ISBN. This is when I really started advertising my next novel’s release (which just happened March 27) – so I took a number of months to connect with reviewers and interviewers while also pushing out more information about Minutes Before Sunset so new readers had a chance to catch up.

November 15, 2013: Dream and Stats

I shared an excerpt from my actual diary from when I was having the dreams that turned in The Timely Death Trilogy. The reason I’m sharing it again as an event is because my sales spiked. (Again, I think this is where things started speeding up for the next release. I like to share this information in the hopes that other authors can see correlations and try it out for themselves.)

December 1, 2013: Seconds Before Sunrise cover reveal

As many of you know, the cover reveal for Seconds Before Sunrise was also a scavenger hunt across 50 AMAZING blogs. Special thanks goes out to everyone who helped me with the event, including Viola Estrella for dealing with my very specific vision for this cover.

Okay. Okay. I know it’s fictional, but his birthday in the novel falls on Friday the 13th, and it was a Friday the 13th that VERY year.

Remember, now AEC releases paperbacks before ebooks. (The ebook of Seconds Before Sunrise releases THIS June.)

March 22, 2014: Seconds Before Sunrise Paperback Arrives

These moments are huge. I never forget them, and I always keep the very first novel I receive on display on my bookshelf. My father took this photo as well. Same back patio – just in the corner this time. I had barely slept the night before because I was out of town, and my dad had texted me to tell me they had arrived. After that, I couldn’t to get back home to hold them!

My latest novels.

My latest novels.

On the same day, Minutes Before Sunset hit 100 ratings on Goodreads at 4.48 stars. I am so happy that so many people have not only read my novels but have taken the time to rate and review them. As of today, The Timely Death Trilogy has 129 ratings at 4.43 stars.

March 27, 2014: Seconds Before Sunrise releases! (paperback only)

We had a lovely time, too! Seconds Before Sunrise made it onto bookshelves, Eric wore a bow, and people won signed paperbacks. We also made it into the top 1,000 in Kindle Store again.

April 8, 2014: Press Release for Seconds Before Sunrise:

This was my first press release. Ever. So I was really happy to finally see it: “Award-Winning Paranormal Fiction Author Publishes Second Book In The Timely Death Trilogy.”

ONE YEAR

May 1, 2014

Because I shared so many extras along the way, please check out these pages: Extras and Reviews. They include what cars the characters drive, personality quizzes, photos, floor plans, and more. The Reviews page includes every blogger that I know of that has reviewed The Timely Death Trilogy. (Thank you so much!)

But wait! There’s even more.

I have future publications coming your way: the ebook of Seconds Before Sunrise releases June 12th, and Death Before Daylight is about to be sent into my content editor. I also have my next novel – that I am still referring to as TMT – coming out THIS YEAR. That’s right. This year. And sooner than you think. I’ll have more news about it soon, so be sure to come back.

The Timely Death Trilogy is only beginning.

New Edition Release

11 Aug

That’s right! Minutes Before Sunset has been updated–cover and all!

So what does this mean? If you’ve seen the paperback physically, the cover may have looked a little washed out. (Less contrast in color) And now it’s been changed due to a number of requests. The cover is as bright as ever, and two more editors have also gone over the novel with my publisher and I. As you all know, I take the opinions of my fans very seriously, and I worked with my publisher to decide it wouldn’t hurt to run it through a touch up process one last time. The new version is a crisp, delicately rewritten product with 2,000 added words, and it’s available as ebook and print now! (This also means those who have already received a copy have a first edition!)  I’m also giving away free ebooks in exchange for review 😀 Email me at ShannonAThompson@aol.com.

Available now on AmazonBarnes & NobleSmashwordsKoboDieselSony, and Apple.

I’m very excited about this, and I am continuing with Seconds Before Sunrise with great hopes!

I also wanted to share AEC Stellar Publishing’s August newsletter:

Screen Shot 2013-08-09 at 6.35.25 PMMany of you might recognize both Raymond Vogel and Sorin Sucui from guest blogging while I was in Pennsylvania! They are deeply talented, and their books are sure to be a great success. So check these two out.

Sorry to keep it short today! Believe it or not, I have even more exciting news coming, and I cannot wait to share as the news releases one event after the other. Here’s to the future for every writer!

Website Wonders

30 Jul

Website Update: Minutes Before Sunset hit 100 adds on Goodreads with a 4.7 star rating!

So I want to share more websites I’ve come across for writing and/or writing tips. But I’m really interested if any of you have done any from the first list. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to reblog, so I’m clarifying this part is NOT me. I’m simply curious to see how others feel about this list, because I found it to be very unique in terms of writing tips. Granted, I’m only putting the tips down–not the explanation, so you should probably go to the article 😀

This is from VictoriaMixon.com (and here is the link to the article)

10 Things To Do To Become a Better Writer in 10 Days:

1. Spend one day being a troll.

2. Spend one whole day being silent.

3. Spend one day as a student of reality.

4. Spend one day with the lyrics of your favorite songs.

5. Spend one day writing and re-writing a single scene.

6. Spend one day on research.

7. Spend one day watching children.

8. Spend one day crying.

9. Spend one day laughing at things nobody thinks are funny but you.

10. Spend one whole day being grateful.

Shannon again. Whether or not you’ve read the article, what did you think of these tips?

Personally, I really liked numbers 3, 6, and 7. I liked 3 and 6, because I think research is really important, but it can also be fun, and I think a lot of people forget that it can be fun. (That’s why I try to share websites like the websites on my post Writing Tips: Setting: Picking a Location.) I think 7 is great, because children can teach everyone a lot. Sometimes, as adults, we think too hard about things. I, personally, love learning when I’m around kids, because they remind me of the obvious–something that can truly morph writing, especially when writing about younger people.

But number 10 is perhaps the most important. Be grateful. I like that, and I value it.

So I wanted to thank everyone with a little piece of comedy from Rebecca Johnson (@johnsonr)

One last thing!

Today is my last post during July! So I wanted to take another moment to thank everyone for this wonderful month of sales and ratings of Minutes Before Sunset during the time it will always be Goodreads Book of the Month

Thank you 😀

I’m still giving away free copies in exchange for review, and I’m doing interviews as well–so feel free to email shannonathompson@aol.com at any time, and I’ll get right back to you!

Seconds Before Sunrise is still on the way, and the future seems…well…seconds away! I cannot wait for it, and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the writing tips.

Have a great week,

150th Post

27 Jul

It’s a good feeling seeing those numbers rise–whether it be fellow authors I’ve connected with, sales, or blog comments that represent all the conversations I’ve had with passionate readers, writers, and dreamers. So I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who supports so many people on this journey of writing and publishing. I am very grateful to have every single one of you cheering me on! And I wanted to share a special moment with everyone:

The photo below was taken on July 31, 2007–the day I received the first copy of November Snow in the mail. I’d just turned 16, but I moved shortly afterward, and I lost the photo…or so I thought. A few days ago, I found it on an old computer’s files. It means a lot to me, because the moment was my first novel’s release, and I’m glad I have it again. I’m sharing it, because it’s another one of those instances where we, as writers, can find inspiration from our pasts.

get-attachment.aspx

But I also have three other wonderful things to share today:

The Examiner reviewed Minutes Before Sunset: 5 STARS!

“Benevolent magical creatures of the Dark called shades live clandestinely among humans as nimble shape-shifters while readying for a pivotal battle against the evil beings of Light.”

Read the rest here. I can promise the reviewer, Lionel Green, has a way with words, and I’m flattered by his in-depth review and analysis of the piece.

And if you want even more information, I’d recommend two delightful interviews I was able to participate in:

Interview by upcoming author, Jackson Paul Baer:

Although I’m interviewed about my novels, Baer also adds some fun questions about what I like outside my writing world. Oceans or Mountains? Favorite T.V. show? Happy or sad ending to a novel?

Find out what I said here.

And this interview focuses on the writing and publishing industry:

Writing Under Fire: Young Blood in the Publishing World

Joanne asks: What was the hardest part for you in the writing process; the outline, synopsis, query or building the story itself? What do you do to promote yourself and your novels? Do you also write in other genres?

Find out what I said here.

I have to thank everyone who follows me, but I also want to emphasize how much I appreciate those who have interviewed me and/or reviewed my novels. I’m always excited to participate, and I look forward to discussing these topics with more and more readers and writers. It’s a wonderful and fun opportunity to connect further, but I can’t do it alone, so thank you for allowing me to do so through your support 😀

Speaking of which, I’m still giving away free copies of Minutes Before Sunset for review in order to celebrate Goodreads Book of the Month for July! If you’re interested in that (or interviews–or anything really!) email me at shannonathompson@aol.com.

I am also thinking about doing more guest blog posts in the future, so look out for that!

Changes are coming, but I’m excited about them!

Have a great weekend,

~SAT

AEC Stellar Notifications

3 Jul

First Update: In order to celebrate Minutes Before Sunset winning Goodreads Book of the Month, ebooks are on sale. Starting July 4th, Minutes Before Sunset will only be $3.89. AEC Stellar Publishing is also giving away free ebook copies in exchange for a review. Simply comment below with an email address or email shannonathompson@aol.com.

I know I promised more writing tips today, but I’m unable to do so today. I apologize, but I hope you understand. However, I will post one shortly. That is a promise.

So what’s the plan today?

I was interviewed by Ink Waters: Freelance Writing Agency, and I’m sharing more exciting news from AEC Stellar Publishing:

Screen Shot 2013-07-02 at 4.08.39 PM

Screen Shot 2013-07-02 at 4.09.11 PM

If you like these updates, you can sign up on the reader’s distribution list here.

Other than that news, I was also interviewed by Ink Waters: Freelance Writing Agency, and I wanted to share it, because it’s short, but it’s also very informative. I was asked six questions, and they really defined what happens behind the scenes with writers.

My favorite question?

“Do you have a particular writing style or any odd writing habits?

I know I talk to myself and make faces when I’m trying to figure out what expression a person would make, but I’m most amused when I take out my hair bun and numerous pens fall out. Just goes to show how much I get distracted by my fantasy land.”

Read the rest of this interview here.

If you want to interview me, send an email to shannonathompson.com. I love talking about anything and everything, so don’t hesitate!

If you’re in America, I hope you have a wonderful Independence Day tomorrow (but I hope everyone has a great day tomorrow!) And I will surely get on writing tips as soon as I can.

Thank you for understanding 😀

Book of the Month: Minutes Before Sunset!

30 Jun

If you read the live updates, then you already knew this, but I wanted to post about it for those who follow me strictly on this website.

Minutes Before Sunset is officially Goodreads Book of the Month for July.

grbomYou can join the discussion by clicking here.

My best friend, Cassie, drew this of me, and it's an accurate description of what I look like as I head off to my cousin's wedding!

My best friend, Cassie, drew this of me, and it’s an accurate description of what I look like as I head off to my cousin’s wedding!

You’re encouraged to discuss what you think about the novel and/or thinking about the novel as you read along. I’d love for everyone who’s reading to participate, so other readers who might be on the fence decide to read it, but I understand if you’re busy! And, again, Making Connections is a great group to promote yourself as well as meet other authors and readers.

Thank you for voting and supporting me! This has been a very exciting experience for me, and I am proud to move into the future with such great supporters. More writing tips and publishing tips are coming next post, but I have to keep it short today! As of right now (June 29, 2:48 p.m. CDT) I am off to see my cousin get married!

Looking forward to future posts and getting back into the swing of things. But, if you’re interested, AEC Stellar Publishing is offering free ebooks of Minutes Before Sunset in exchange for a review. Simply email me at shannonathompson@aol.com, and I will get it sent over to you right away!

July 2 (or 3): Holidays in Writing

Last Day to Vote

28 Jun

June 29 Update: Minutes Before Sunset won Book of the Month on Goodreads! Check it out here, and share your thoughts in an open discussion group. Thank you so much for your support, everyone! If it wasn’t for you guys, I wouldn’t be here, and I owe every delightful moment of excitement to you! Thank you!

If you follow me on a regular basis, then you already know what this is, but today is the last day to vote, and I had to share it. Minutes Before Sunset is nominated for Book of the Month on Goodreads, and I’m very excited and flattered to be a part of this competition, because it’s a physical gift for all of the hard work everyone has gone through to help me achieve this.

These are the current rankings (showing the top five):

Screen Shot 2013-06-27 at 8.33.45 PM

As you can see, Minutes Before Sunset is in first place with 53 votes, but every vote brings me happiness through the encouragement you all have shown. In order to vote, you either need a Facebook, Twitter, or Goodreads. When you click on this link, join “Making Connections” (top right of the picture) so it can register the vote.

This is another reason I’m sharing this.

Making Connections” is a great group which allows authors and readers to connect and promote their novels. For instance, Book of the Month for August is up for nominations, and every month in the future will come after. There are also groups within the groups in order to talk about marketing within the indie publishing industry and beyond. Even if you don’t vote, I highly encourage checking out this group

This is the group’s direct description online: “Over 1000 books listed to Read & Review…..come join us. This is a place for Authors, Bloggers, Publishers, Reviewers, Book Tours, Giveaways, and Interviews to make connections, find followers, ask for help with Blog Tours, Interviews, or just need some help with your blog.”

Again, please vote for Minutes Before Sunsetbut I understand if you can’t. “Making Connections” is a fantastic meeting place for authors, and I hope some of you join. You’re always welcome to add me as a friend too!

Bogart and I are working hard, and by that I mean I’m working hard and Bogart is working hard to distract me with cuddles. (Don’t worry; I love it.)

As I finish up the editing of “Seconds Before Sunrise” (Book 2 of a Timely Death series), I wanted to share something I received from a reader.

Upcoming author, Gregory Lamb, gave Minutes Before Sunset 5 stars and wrote this review:
“I loved the character development. I think young adult readers will be able to identify with them. I’m looking forward to reading the the other books in the series.”

Read this rest here, and I’m looking forward to posting more in the future.
